Celebrities that endorse Eco Friendly Fashion. Part 1

Emma Watson
This British bombshell is not only our childhood sweetheart from the Harry Potter series, but has taken Social Economic issues to another level. Not only is she an ambassador to the UN, she has endorsed and cosigned a sustainability lifestyle and is part of the of the fashion revolution by being a designer of eco friendly beauty and fashion products. I her own words…

I made a choice last year that I would only wear sustainable fashion on the red carpet. The fashion industry is the second-biggest pollutant of fresh water on the planet. It has such a huge environmental impact and such a big human impact. And it’s just not enough for me anymore that it’s a beautiful item or a beautiful piece.”
Reading through this quote makes me feel like we are making progress in the right direction. Knowing that the bigger part of influential figures are ambassadors for fast fashion brands, therefore push consumerism in fashion by collaborating with brands that are notorious for mass production and a lack in transparency in the way the carry out their production and transactions. This makes a large number of their followers prone to to being prey to such brands and making them party to a distractive culture. Emma Watson in this regard creates a space and a trend that normalises celebrity influence to something that is actually positively impactful to the people.
Her design work
Emma Watson created an instagram account solely dedicated to designs that are eco friendly, in this she promotes looks and designs from different eco friendly designers. Feel free to follow her https://www.instagram.com/the_press_tour/
In 2009, when eco fashion was not even on my mind, Emma Watson collaborated with the People tree http://www.peopletree.de/ on a sustainable collection. This goes to show how early she understood her impact and how she used it for the best. She said, “I was excited by the idea of using fashion as a tool to alleviate poverty and knew it was something I could help make a difference with”.

It is important for us to understand the impact of the celebrities that we look up to. It is not fitting that a personality promotes activities or products that are not securing resources for our future children. We also need to hold them accountable for their type of influence they sell to their followers. But today, we celebrate the few that we have that have taken sustainability to mainstream and are at the fore front in being part of the fashion revolution.
