5 ways to make your clothes last longer.

In this blogpost, you will learn a few ways in which you can take care of your clothing. Many of us have beautiful pieces of clothing that we do not nurture correctly, this makes us want to buy more as opposed to maintaining what we already own. Here are 5 ways that you can take care of your clothes.
Read care tags
Most clothing comes with care tags, that is usually a hanging on the inside, one must look through the garment and find a satin looking piece on which there are instructions of how to maintain the garment.

Here are some common care tags and what they mean.
Download the pictures above and use them as reference to take care of your clothes.
Stop washing after every wear.
For many garments, it is okey for them to be worn a couple of times before they can be washed. Most clothing gets worn out because of over washing, this is caused by harsh detergents that eventually wash away the original colour and yarn strength. Some clothing when washed a couple of times loses its shape and is not wearable anymore. Another example would be denims and corduroys and other heavy fabrics. These can be maintained without washing at each wear, besides, they require a lot of water and energy to wash. This is also good for sustainability as it helps to reduce waste of water through washing. I understand where I come from in Uganda, it is always hot and dusty so our clothing is always prone to dirt and sweat hence having to wash all the time. But in clean first countries, I would advise a person to use discretion before they can decide to wash an outfit after wearing it, I would not suggest immediately throw in the machine after one wear, and hey guys, this DOES NOT apply for under garments, wash those with every wear.
Adjust big or small clothing.
Many of us are lazy to take those clothes to a tailor, and the end up sitting in out closet, with the hope to once wear them but never getting to wear them. When we are cleaning out our closet, we remember that we have never worn something that is absolutely beautiful but just does not fit.

Repair torn or broken clothing.
It is important for everyone to own a sewing kit, this makes it easy to repair small things like ripped buttons. There are some garments that we love so much and we would like keep for a lifetime, however when not repaired, they lose their value and can not even be given to another person as second hand. This also stops the need to buy new clothes at every turn. Our grandparents were very smart and had the right idea with clothing repairs.
Do not machine dry if you can avoid it.
For many people living in cold places, it might be difficult to dry our clothing with natural heat. In this case, for t-shirts, and other lighter clothing, I would advise to hang them dry in your house after machine washing them. This is because machine drying makes the fibre weaker at every tumble and de-colourises garments while it dries them. This unnatural heat is very harsh on clothing and to our households due to the air and noise polluting effects. I would recommend an indoor hanging line where to hang all the sensitive garments that we can not machine dry. As for those in tropical areas, please make use of the natural energy as it is said that the heat from the sun gives good vibrations to the clothing and once you put in on you body, the same vibrations are transferred to you.

In conclusion, just like we take goo care of the food we eat, we need to take care of our clothing by creating a personal relationship that enables you to grow to love them and even be proud to pass them down your family members.
