5 Simple Eco-friendly Habits
Share
Being eco-friendly is the new trend lately. Due to all the problems we are facing as a world, there has been need for a switch in behavioural patterns that will impact the positive change we need so desperately. Here are some of the things we can do to remain sustainable and have an eco-friendly harmless lifestyle.
Do not be wasteful
Have you been taking out your trash and realise that most of the trash in the bins and at the rubbish pits is usually waste. Fresh waste in form of food that people single handedly bought, made and did not eat. Have you seen the number of people around the world suffering from famine and a lack of basic needs like food and clothing. This is the irony in our world today. Due to capitalism, resources have been distributed in accordance of who is the biggest, fastest leaving behind a group of people that need a boost from others to get to a decent standard of living.

With this picture in mind, it is our responsibility to only and always get what is enough for us and leave the rest for other people to enjoy. Every time you are going to throw away food, please remember this perspective and make a positive change towards becoming eco-friendly.
Use public transport, Do Not fly Private, Carpool if you can.
Many of us own cars and feel its a prestige to have a private experience on out journeys. I understand that it is important today to own a car. But is it necessary in most cases? That is the question that we need to ask. It is more sustainable for the individual and the environment to use public means of transport.

This is because every car on its own produces tons of carbonmonoxide and toxic gases, even if it is an electric car, the energy used for one car and one person is not fair to all concerned. Let alone the flights we take, where some people will fly private, I think this is a little selfish considering how much blood has been shed due to oil wars.

When you take public transport, you reduce the amount of resources you would need to travel privately. Let us make small changes with these decisions that if you can do away with pride and know that it is ok to take public transport, and that it saves our environment a lot of toxins. Additionally, you can carpool with other people especially if you are heading for the same destination.

Reduce/reuse/Recycle/refuse the 4 Rs

Refuse: Refuse to use environmental harmful products, refuse to participate in activities that are detrimental to us and to the environment.
Reduce: Reduce waste by consuming only what is required to survive, not go beyond for negative satisfaction which leads to waste. So reduce the amounts of everything that produces toxic residue.
Recycle: It is completely ok to recycle products and services to preserve and conserve resources. Recycle plastic products like bottles, straws and many PET products. If you can not reuse, it is important to pass it on to another person that will benefit from it.
Reuse: we should make it OK and be OK with consuming already used products and services. And we should reuse an item until it has served its time and is ready to be recycled or upcycled.
Separate your trash/waste
Let us make it our responsibility to separate our trash in accordance to material and composition. This makes the recycling process easier and cheaper for the companies that are dealing with the trash. It also helps save the environment because if you mix biodegradable waste, with plastics, it ends up in the soils or oceans, this applies to mixing fabrics in the same trash as metallic objects or glass , this is not sustainable at all. Make a habit of separating your trash and you will se how your life will change.

Give back to the environment
They say “to whom much is given, much is expected”. Many of us have been blessed with a life with resources and basic needs that we get from nature. It is our obligation to give back and keep the conversation of environmental conservation active and the solutions doable and achievable. These are some things that you can do to give back.
- Plant a tree
- Clean a river or water way
- Clean a beach near you
- Condemn non eco friendly activities and products
- Educate more people about sustainability
- Share this information
- Donate to the less fortunate
- Support eco friendly businesses.
These are some of the few simple habits that you can pick up towards an eco friendly lifestyle.
